Lead source taxonomy builder

Tick the channels your business actually uses. The builder generates your picklist values across all three levels, plus a CSV of those values to paste into your CRM's property or field editor. No email required, no gate; it is just a tool.

Tick a channel on the left and your picklist builds here.

The file holds the values themselves. Both CRMs set their picklist options in their own editor rather than by upload, so paste from the file instead of importing it.

Next: paste these into your CRM's property or field editor.

Take it to your CRM

What to do with the values once you have them.

  1. Create or open your lead source field. In HubSpot this is a contact property; in Salesforce it is a field on the Lead and Opportunity objects.
  2. Paste the values in as the field's options. Neither CRM accepts a CSV for picklist options, so the file is a working list you paste from, not an import.
  3. Set the field to a dropdown so nobody can type a new value. Free text is what put you here.

For what to do with the values once you have them, including the mapping pass for the messy field you already have, see the lead source taxonomy guide. Already have a field full of free text? Paste the distinct values into the lead source normalizer and it will map them onto these categories for you.

Common questions

Taxonomy builder questions

How many lead source categories should I have?

Fewer than you think. The test is whether someone reading a report can tell what happened to generate the lead without asking. Fourteen channels across five types covers most businesses, and cutting the ones you do not use is better than keeping them for completeness.

Can I import this CSV straight into HubSpot or Salesforce?

No, and no tool can. Picklist options are set in your CRM’s property or field editor rather than by file upload, so the download gives you the values in one place to paste in. The CSV is a working list, not an importer.

What if a channel we use is not in the list?

Add it deliberately, with one person owning the field. The failure mode is not a missing channel; it is two people inventing two names for the same channel in the same quarter.

Should I include an “Other” category?

We would not. Within a quarter it becomes the largest category in the database, and every value in it has lost the information you built the taxonomy to capture. If a value genuinely does not fit, that is a signal your tracking has a gap.

What about the messy values already in my CRM?

Those need mapping rather than replacing, or every trend report breaks the day you launch. The lead source normalizer takes your existing values and maps them to these categories.
